2005 - October 12th - Wednesday

JH phoned Sara and made arrangements to call on her at 1530 – after JH’s WRVS1 Teabar session.  During the chat JH explained how it came about that JH offered Kathy a kidney; JH explained that her age had not been the first consideration, but her blood group was; Sara confirmed that O RH positive was the universal donor; Sara elicited from JH a brief résumé of JH’s intentions and health status [JH mentioned that she was not on drugs other than vaginal oestrogen, ie, HRT, and that she had had treatment for reflux and IBS but not at present].

Sara particularly asked JH to give information of her counterpart contact at the Transplant Centre at which the operations would be undertaken; Sara gave JH her Card, and two leaflets about Live Kidney Donation.  JH mentioned that she was waiting to see Paul Fewings with regards to her left-sided sciatica.

JH phoned Kathy late afternoon and spoke to Ralph, Kathy’s husband; Kathy had not yet returned from her dialysis session to which and from which she drove herself; Ralph was asked by JH to confirm Kathy’s DOB, and other information required by Sara.  Kathy phoned back in evening but was in a bit of a hurry as she had folks visiting.  However, she made a note, in particular, about providing JH/Sara with a contact person’s name and Post. JH also asked Sara if JH could call again on Friday afternoon, 14 October 2005.

Action: JH read all the leaflets given to her and made notes thereon about things to mention to Sara.

1 Even before JH had retired, Judy B, one of JH's secretarial colleagues had almost fallen about laughing during a conversation - because all things about JH reminded Judy of Aunt Joan in the Doc Martin television series.  Since then . . . the number of occasions - when JH has been mistaken for the Actress (no female actors here please), Stephanie Cole - has risen to double figures.  In the 2006 television production of Housewife 49 - the story of Nella Last's diary which Mrs Last wrote in reply to an appeal from the Mass Observation Project - Stephanie Cole was cast as the imperious Mrs Waite who organised the WVS's War Effort in Mrs Last's neighbourhood.  A photograph of Mrs Waite in her WVS uniform is attached, together with a photograph of JH working as a Volunteer in one of the Tea Bars in Derriford Hospital: but JH never even got issued with her WRVS tabard!
