2006 - February 24th - Friday

JH spoke to Dr Allwood’s Secretary on the phone and she also confirmed the story – verifying that the letter – to Dr Allwood - had been sent to the Nephrology Department (which JH does not recollect mentioning had ‘gone astray’ – after all, it wasn’t this Secretary’s fault).  JH also spoke to Dr M-A’s Secretary who explained, again, that she had been given the name of Dr Allwood, by the Switchboard at Derriford Hospital – when she asked for the name of a Nephrologist; she could not remember which day she had phoned.  JH asked Dr M-A’s Secretary to speak with Maggie, whom Sara had undertaken to contact, but JH did not reiterate Sara’s request that the latter be copied in with all correspondence.

JH spoke to one of the PALS ladies to explain the saga of miscommunication, and JH spoke to Tony Tatam, Switchboard Manager at Derriford, and explained that a Medical Secretary had telephoned Derriford Hospital Switchboard and asked to be given the name of a Nephrologist but was given Dr Allwood’s name; JH and Tony had considerable discussion; Tony said that, usually, if someone rings up asking for the name of someone to write to in a specific Speciality, that the caller would be put through to the appropriate Department; however, JH observed that perhaps Dr M-A’s Secretary had rung when there was no-one available to speak to; Tony did concede that the list of phone numbers on the Switchboard Operators’ Computers does list the Neonatologists’ names just before the Nephrologists’ Names!

JH received a copy letter addressed to Dr M Denton, Consultant Nephrologist; the letter was dated the day before, ie, 23 February 2006.  The letter was the same as the first letter dispatched by Dr M-A’s Secretary; JH was ‘Miss’; Kathy’s GP’s name was (again) incorrect; Sara had not been copied in.

JH told Sara that JH had received a copy letter but that Sara Stacey had not been copied in; Sara stated that Dr Denton would hand his copy of the letter to her in due course, and that Sara would arrange an appointment for JH (Sara had not actually phoned and/or emailed Maggie).
