2007 - July 11th - Wednesday

JH received a super thank-you card from the Skinners in which she was told to be ‘pleased with herself’!  This card has joined the thank-you card, sent to JH in October 2005, laying over the kidneys of the hippo in the window!

JH went to the Area Committee Meeting held at the Halcyon Centre in North Prospect.  She caught the number 16B bus back to Kings Tamerton Road; JH walked down the path into Peters Park Close so that she could walk past the site of the St Budeaux and District Gardeners’ Derelict Store which had recently been demolished.  Whilst walking past a small skip, just before reaching the steps down into the path between Ferrers Road and Peters Park Lane, JH’s left foot ‘turned’ and JH fell flat on her face

A lass - who had been watching JH with great interest as she approached - was obviously very frightened by seeing this strange lady falling down in front of her; JH asked for help but the girl said something about ‘getting mum’ and rushed off.  There was silence - as all the other children had stopped playing on their bikes and scooters; they surrounded JH and one brave young lady asked if JH needed any help; JH rapidly made several new friends.

JH struggled from the prone position and found a paper tissue in her handbag to stem the flow of blood from her right thumb, which she had obviously caught in her ‘shooting stick’ seat; one lass carried JH’s bag, another lass carried JH’s coat which was in a plastic bag the handles of which had snapped, and a lad carried the shooting stick.  As JH got up, and made her way down the steps – which fortunately had a central rail - a lady appeared at the bottom who was, of course, mum; JH explained that she was postoperative, and had just fallen when her foot turned, but fortunately had not succeeded in breaking anything!

There was a mustering of resources, mum’s slippers were fetched, the dog was locked in, bikes were in the custody of a borrower - and not left to be pinched.  About 6 children plus mum escorted JH to her gate, and the children went into the front garden and left JH’s things on her steps. JH asked the frightened young lady what her name was and she was told ‘Abi’; JH admired Abi’s lovely ginger hair and hoped that Abi did not get teased about having ginger hair as JH thought it was really nice.  As JH went indoors, she told the assembled company that, when she was feeling better, they could come and look at her hippo collection!

‘Personal Inspection’ revealed grazes on the palms of both hands, and grazes on both knees but, as JH was wearing a stout pair of trousers, the latter had not ripped; the right thumb injury seemed to be due to catching the edge of the nail – fortunately there was no haematoma under the nail, and there was no obvious laceration which might have needed suturing.  The thumb-throbbing diminished sufficiently for JH to sleep reasonably well, and also JH could type, and play the recorder, but finger/thumb grip was not very comfortable for 2/52.

Further notes with regards to JH’s FALL on 11 July 2007  On Monday 16th July, JH walked down Peters Park Close (having got off the 46 bus) and two young ladies said ‘Hello’!  Ellie, aged 9 years, and Paige, aged 7 years, told JH the names of all the children who had come to JH’s assistance (as well as themselves): Courtney, aged 9 years, is Paige’s sister; Chris, aged 11years; Millie, aged 11 years; Ellis, aged 8 years; and Abi – who, as JH had thought, goes to a very special school - and her Mum.  Ellie and Paige told me the names of all the schools the children go to, but JH ran out of space on the back of her bus ticket to write this down.  Each time JH walks that way from the bus she gets a cheerful wave!
