2007 - July 7th - Saturday

JH phoned Ralph at home about 11.15am: JH had tried several times during the morning but the line was constantly engaged.  Ralph didn’t know if he was coming or going: Kathy had still got a discharge from her wound in which she has MRSA, although Kathy had already assured JH that the infection was very superficial, ie, only ‘on the skin’; Ralph told JH that his blood sugar was +/-18.  However, Kathy has not been isolated and so is still in her airy bed by the window, but visitors have to wear gowns.  Ralph had made an appointment to see his GP but he had had a call from the Surgery saying that it had been postponed till Monday; Ralph also said that he had planned to visit Kathy Thursday, 5th July, but had felt so wobbly when he went out to the car that he abandoned the idea; subsequently Kathy and Ralph had decided that he would not visit on Friday 6th.

Furthermore, Lorraine was all in pieces because she had found another lump in her breast: apparently, three weeks ago, before her mother’s op, Lorraine and Kathy had gone together to Hospital where Lorraine had had a biopsy; this biopsy was NOT cancer: JH cannot recollect if this is the first she has heard about this problem.  However, added to these anxieties is that Lorraine’s step mother, who has already been diagnosed as having cervical cancer, has another problem as well [JH cannot remember what it is].  Ralph had received JH’s call minder message of yesterday, and apologised for not replying; he also said that he had not looked at the email box at home but, as Kathy knew yesterday that JH had an oozy wound, JH did wonder if Kathy was receiving emails into her HOME email box {via the console} – or perhaps JH had mentioned it at some point, and to Bill.  However, as there had been such trouble with the console by her bed, JH is really totally confused as to how messages are getting through; she suggested to Ralph, who did plan to visit Kathy this afternoon, that Kathy abandons the use of the console and we communicate by telephone!  Ralph told JH that he had a CM message from Ann Elflein but that he had not replied.

JH phoned Paulin Ward and asked for the results of her MRSA screening which was looked up on the Computer {no searching for notes} and it was negative

Ann rang JH in afternoon:  JH reiterated the conversation she had had with Ralph earlier; JH also explained about JH’s problems with her wound and that she was finding taking the antibiotics somewhat of an effort; Ann said she was puzzled why she hadn’t heard from Estelle Radford and JH explained that Estelle had rung JH two days ago and asked JH to verify Ann’s phone number; JH said that she was feeling better then a couple of days ago - when the weather had been so awful - and that she was pottering around; JH said she had recently had long and ‘distracting’ conversations with Angela Tilly and Bill Hipsey; Mary was presently in London cat-sitting for Mary Haddock.  JH expected Mary to ring tomorrow, not this evening as Mary was at a ‘Do’ at Frances’s house; JH would ask Mary to visit Kathy in Paulin Ward if at all possible.

JH took her temperature in the afternoon and discovered it was 100°F.  JH had just got up after her rest - when she had been buried under her hippo sleeping bag; after a deal of head scratching, JH found a conversion table at the back of her dictionary, for converting Fahrenheit temperatures into Centigrade temperatures, and came up with 37.7°C which was 0.2° higher than when Dr Donaldson took it on Monday evening – which he had said was ‘all right’.

Kathy phoned JH: the first time the Nurse arrived to do her observations, the second time the Doctors arrived but, finally, we managed to have a conversation just before Kathy ate her supper: Ralph’s blood sugar had gone up to 28 and he had gone into Southend Hospital as an emergency admission; Ralph is, of course, not adhering to his diabetic diet; also it’s just as well he wasn’t driving!  JH had further chats about Kathy emailing JH – about which JH was getting somewhat confused; Kathy had got JH’s email telling K about JH having an oozy wound; JH got a slight ticking-off because she admitted to not using the antibacterial body wash, which she had been given on admission, each time she washed:– anyway, JH does not think that she could have whipped up a lather when washing her hair!  It is apparent that Kathy is opening her HOME email box at the Hospital.  Kathy has had a drip put up; she has ointment to smear on her wound; she shuffles about as her legs are so swollen; she is PUing well.  In fact, JH is still Kathy’s bestest friend – to which Ralph agrees in spite of all his anxieties!

JH rang Ann and told her that Ralph had gone to Southend Hospital.  Kathy rang during the adverts whilst JH was watching Midsomer Murders, and reported that Ralph had been sent home again with a strong telling-off ringing in his ears about his diabetic management!  Kathy rang off speedily but did say that she was looking forward to seeing Myles in his gown when he next came to visit!

In view of the date being the seventh of the seventh, memorial TV and radio programmes were broadcast.
