JH’S TRIP TO THE RLH FOR FRESH CROSS-MATCHING

JH set out – in a somewhat less rushed fashion than on her previous trip - to catch the 3.45pm train to Paddington; there was some delay due to a wait outside one of the stations en route, so JH arrived about 35 minutes late at Paddington; JH endeavoured to phone Sue at JHH but got no reply, so JH rang the Security Office to say that she would be later than expected to which the reply was ‘we’re here all night!’.  Using the phones at Paddington Station is rather like playing tiddlywinks with coins!  JH arrived at JHH at about 9.00pm; JH went to the Sitting room where a lady called Margaret was watching the TV; two other people arrived and the gentleman ‘compared notes’ with Margaret; it became apparent to JH that these two people were going to have some sort of gut resections the following day; the gentleman’s partner told me that he had lost several stone in weight over the previous few months: these people were obvious very poorly.

2007 - June 11th - Monday

JH forgot to take her alarm clock with her and, consequently, woke up at 8.45am!  JH had some breakfast and bumped into the gent’s partner – both patients having had to go to their Ward at some unearthly early hour.  JH introduced herself to Sue, the ‘Relief’ Manager in JHH - who is, in actual fact, also one of the Bed Managers in the Hospital; JH said that she had tried to phone her about 8.10pm, but Sue had left just before 8.00pm; in any event, upon JH being given a small leaflet, with all the info about JHH thereon, JH realised that she had noted down the extension numbers the wrong way round.  JH asked to be booked into JHH on Sunday, 17th June; JH explained to Sue that she would be phoning the Ward on that morning to check that a bed was available, if this was the case JH would phone ex 2624 to leave a message to say she does not need a bed.

JH went to the Renal Outpatients Department where Ray took 50ml of blood in 5 pots.  On request, Ray gave JH a DVD on which was recorded the Stories of two live transplant donors and recipients.  Also, as JH had given all her booklets to a friend, who had expressed an interest in learning more about kidney donation, Ray gave JH: Emotions of living donation published in 2005, a photocopy of Human Tissue Authority Information about living-donor transplants, a photocopy of Information Having a kidney transplant, Living Donor Kidney Transplantation Donor and recipient perspectives, Living Donor Kidney Transplantation Your questions answered.

JH’s trip home was an adventure during the afternoon: she arrived at Paddington to read on the notices that all the Penzance trains were disrupted because there was a broken-down train in Cornwall and, just as she was looking at the departure screen, all the trains from Plymouth were cancelled due to a power failure!  So JH took the advice of the announcer and went to Waterloo Station but just missed one train to Reading - where JH hoped to change trains, as Paddington had re-opened!  And the next train to Reading was so sardine-packed that JH gave up trying to get in.  Finally JH caught the train from Waterloo to Paignton departing at 2.20pm - changed at Newton Abbot – actually arriving home at 8.00pm.  JH had just sat, and relaxed, and looked at a different view of the English Countryside.

Kathy sent JH an email saying that she had not improved but that she guessed it was nerves; Kathy said her blood tests were all normal – and how did JH get on with hers?

2007 - June 12th - Tuesday

JH typed a list of phone numbers and addresses, and sent a copy to BS Ann.
