2008 - July 1st - Tuesday

Although it had been a lovely day yesterday, in view of the likelihood of the sea water in Tinside Lido being still cold after our wet and chilly summer, Ralph took the two swimmers over to Plympton Pool and, after dropping us off, nipped off to do his ‘own thing’; Kathy and JH sat in the Park until the adult swimming session began at 11.50am.  Kathy was obviously flagging, and needed to make a supreme effort – rather then disappoint her enthusiastic hostess by opting out of coming.  In the pool - in which JH was doing her usual 20 or so lengths - with some difficulty as there were a lot of bodies to collide with, Kathy did say that she was really struggling with pains in her back and legs; however, she did have a bit of a wallow in the quieter bay of the pool.  By the time JH got out, Kathy had showered and was partially dressed but was really weary.  Ralph had had a potter around Plympton, and said that he had spotted the Skinner Dipper, and the Hippolady, from the observation area; he collected us in the car, just to take us up the steep slope from the pool to park near the Sir Joshua Reynolds where we partook of lunch.  On the way back to St Budeaux, JH dropped off her glass for recycling in the bottle bank at West Park.  The Skinners went to bed for the afternoon!

However, the Skinners were up and more or less ready to go to Derriford Hospital’s Health and Leisure Centre for the 7.30 start of a Quiz held to raise funds for Jeremiah’s Journey, an in-house charity which provides support for bereaved children.  We met Mary, who had registered us as two Teams for the princely fee of £2 a Team but, unfortunately, Jenny and Rob had let Kathy know that they would be unable to make it: so we comprised one Team of four (instead of two of three).  This was a good evening (and JH feels sure was more to the Skinners ‘taste’ than going to Sue’s to hear recorder playing), although it got rather noisy and hot - the function room being full of anything up to 100 punters.  Eventually JH requested that the other fire exit door be opened, if it didn’t break the rules: anyway folks were already nipping out for fags (thank goodness it’s now illegal to smoke inside the Centre but perhaps outside the fire exit is not appropriate either)!  Mary was providing rather more of the answers than JH and K – to Ralph who was doing the writing on the entry form which was a bit inscrutable – which necessitated Mary struggling to hear over the hullabaloo, and the whole Team (especially JH) all talking at once, but she did very well; she had to leave just before the last practical bus left for Tavistock - but waived her claim to a bottle of wine won in the raffle.  JH went to the bar to explain that the bottle of wine would not be collected and so offered it to another punter who had not won anything, and who was most grateful, and who gave JH a kiss!
