2008 - July 26th - Saturday

JH went to Maidenhead Library, but was unable to access her emails on Orange Webmail for some reason.  However, whilst there, JH enquired about bus services to the Savill Gardens by Windsor Great Park: JH was told that there was a bus which she could catch to the gardens, but this information proved to be OOD - when JH enquired at the Tourist Information Office on arrival at Windsor.  Never Mind: JH had already been entertained by watching the Changing of the Guard whilst sat on her stationary bus.  JH then went on a delightful trip up the Thames in a steamer to Dorney Lock and back, and ate a packet of fudge, and some fruit from her bag – having left her picnic lunch behind by the cash machines in L-TSB which was of course shut when she returned.

JH sat reading in the Park, with young persons chattering in French whilst sat on the grass all around her in the very warm sunshine.  A superbly caparisoned pair of black horses drawing a splendid carriage brought a bride and groom ‘in State’ along the Long Mile into Windsor; outside the Town Hall, the madding crowds of tourists weaved round the superbly-mannered black horses; JH sat on her wheelie to watch the proceedings and so was spoken to in a most friendly manner by the bride’s father; JH asked to be introduced to the three young bridesmaids - the youngest of whom had abandoned her shoes, and was very hot and tired, and had not been feeling well all day, and was really overcome with shyness.

JH then had a cream tea at the Copper Kettle, a well known rendezvous right by the entrance to Windsor Castle. [JH was very tempted to eat half of another lady’s cream tea which she left behind on her plate, ie, a large scone with lashings of jam and cream: why do people waste so much food!  What is more, JH had paid considerably more for her cream tea in Windsor than she would have done in the West Country – or perhaps she is just out of date with inflation!]
