2008 - March 20th - Thursday

JH printed off a recent article in the Herald about the Health Reporter, Diana Prince’s experiences of being an overnight inpatient in Derriford Hospital following her operation for a slipped disc.  JH felt for Diana – with the latter’s tales of disturbed sleep in particular.  It was just as well that Diana was young and fit (other than having the slipped disc), but unfortunately ‘that’s how life is’ in a busy acute hospital ward: but JH realises that choosing to be an inpatient – for however long – will not be ‘a bed of roses’.  [JH sent the article to Kathy.]

2008 - March 28th - Friday

JH spoke to Bill Hipsey on the phone: Bill and Pic are planning to come down to visit Stephen in Tavistock on 12th April: it will be their son Steven’s 50th birthday, and there grandson Buster’s 22nd birthday around about that date.  In actual fact, JH had left a message on their answerphone earlier in March to tell them that there had been a Radio 4 programme about the anniversary of Betty MacDonald’s birthday: JH had loaned The Egg and I to them.  JH spoke to Pic on 23rd March when Pic said that they were both recuperating from a horrendous journey back from Cuba – where they had sat on the Airport tarmac for 5 hours before embarking on their 18-hour or so return flight back home.  Therefore, they were ‘off the idea’ of going anywhere more adventurous than Devon at the moment!  [The Bill Hipseys confirmed that JH’S copy of The Egg and I was NOT a first edition.]

2008 - April 3rd Thursday

JH received a website printout about the Star, in Steeple, which Kathy has definitely decided to book for the Millennium Reunion for WE of 21st, 22nd, and 23rd August 2009.  JH also received another newspaper cutting about Tony Benn – together with the information that K and R had searched out his house on the Blackwater Estuary, with a view to inviting him to the next Millennium Reunion – so JH understands.

2008 - April 8th - Tuesday

Telecom between JH and K: K is anxious to know if JH’s appointment at the RLH is confirmed as being on Thursday 1st May.  JH undertook to phone Ray Trevitt to check as JH had not yet received an appointment letter – which she did later in the week.  Kathy was feeling somewhat exhausted - whilst looking after Myles - as mum and dad were away in Spain visiting Lorraine’s step-relatives and sorting out her step-mother’s effects.

2008 - April 13th - Sunday

Bill rang JH from Slapton, where he and Pic are staying at a Hotel, at about 11.40am.  JH had difficulty in hearing the phone conversation – Bill was using granddaughter Jenny’s mobile which was ‘running down’.  However, it was agreed that JH would go for her swim as planned, as there was no doubt that Pic and Bill would be coming to Plymouth later in the day; JH dressed as swiftly as possible, grabbed her bathing things, and got to the Plympton Pool at just after 12.00md.  however, due to a ‘shortage’ of lifeguards, sessions were being held – so JH was unable to go in for a swim for ¾ hour.  In any event, JH obtained a snack lunch from the vending machines in the interim, and read the good book she always carries with her.  Afterwards, the journey home was exceptionally ‘long-winded’, as the Sunday bus service seemed rather ‘sluggish’ and JH just managed to miss rather infrequent connections.  Anyway, JH got home {having purchased some cake and biscuits just in case} to find a mango perched on her door-handle, and a copy of The Book Thief – which Bill had recommended as a good read - poked through her letter box.  JH did ring Steven’s home in Tavistock {not being able to find Jenny’s mobile number, and not knowing the name of the Hotel) and left a message on their CM to explain that JH seemed to have missed mum and dad’s visit; subsequently JH did speak to Bill on the phone – who complained that their mango was rock hard, whereas JH’s had been juicy and delicious!
