2008 - September 14th - Sunday

JH went to a Geology Walkabout at the Cemetery and on return home had received a CM message from Kathy in which Kathy said that she would phone JH in the evening; JH also received an email from Hazel, asking JH to ‘. . . fill me in with your plans and needs!!!’.  However, as JH had not heard from Kathy by 8.30pm she phoned K on her mobile number but, somehow, Kathy ‘crossed’ a brief message with JH saying that she was in bed but would ring JH tomorrow.  JH rang up Hazel and thanked her for her offer to ‘fall in’ with any arrangements that JH could make to meet with Kathy and Ralph, but JH then explained that it was quite apparent that Kathy was still really struggling - as she had not been able to have any sort of discussion with JH on the phone.  Hazel would be free from 1.30pm on the following day, as she did not work a complete day on Mondays, but, as she was expecting to have Karen’s youngest delivered to Granny for a couple of nights on Wednesday, she would be unable to arrange a meeting for Wednesday, 17th September – a day which had been suggested by Kathy.  Hazel gave JH her mobile number.

2008 - September 15th - Monday

As JH really felt that she had to finalise any arrangements to meet Hazel, and the Skinners, so that she could plan the week ahead on her own behalf, she rang Kathy on her mobile at about 10.00am:  Kathy answered after a long ringing tone; she was actually in the car – with Ralph driving; she had had a terrible night and had had to see a doctor; she said that she would speak to JH ‘later’ as she knew that JH was endeavouring to arrange a get together with JH’s friend; JH said that it had been unfortunate that K and JH had not spoken together yesterday, as Hazel was free this afternoon.  It was quite apparent to JH that Kathy was unable to continue a coherent conversation as she was ‘so weak’ and so JH asked if Ralph could speak to JH – which was the point at which JH realised they were in the car.

Ralph managed to draw in to a bus bay, and Ralph actually said to JH that he had hoped that this was a visit during which there would be no need to visit a doctor; the Doctor who had seen Kathy noted the long list of ‘troubles’ going on with Kathy; Ralph said that the treatment with Flagyl did seem to be ‘helping’ with K’s diarrhoea – until she had had the diarrhoea all last night; he mentioned that K had had a cappuccino coffee, and wondered if it was something to do with dairy products which set off K’s diarrhoea again.  JH said that, under no circumstances was he to consider driving down to Plymouth during their week’s stay at Croyde Bay, to which injunction from JH Ralph replied that he had ‘been prepared’ to pack up and go home this very morning.  JH said that she would visit him and Kathy by public transport on Wednesday.   JH could sit down and weep, but she went for her first swim at Plympton Pool - since Tinside Lido had shut.

In the evening JH telephoned Hazel to explain why JH had not taken up Hazel’s offer to be ‘available’ in the afternoon.  JH told Hazel about the conversations she had had with the Skinners that morning, and JH also expressed – in no uncertain terms – her dismay at observing that Kathy had ‘no joy in her life’ and that JH was really beginning to wonder if it was really ‘worth Kathy struggling on’.  As JH had mentioned to Hazel that Kathy was being treated with metronidazole to eradicate the Clostridium Difficile in her gut, Hazel did wonder if JH was at risk of contracting this bug from Kathy; however, JH explained that she did NOT have deficient immunity, as Kathy does because she is taking anti-rejection medication.
